“I am involved in social practice and performance but I consider myself a sculptor—so much work can be done by an object.” - Simone Leigh

Artist Simone Leigh’s practice is an object-based exploration of black female subjectivity and labor. Informed by her interests in African art, feminism, and ethnography she creates sculpture, videos, installations, and performance-related work. Leigh investigates historical narratives as well as the lived experience of black women, in work that includes reenactments and art in the public realm.
